Q: Is it safe for babies with eczema?

submitted by - 2 months ago
  • A: Thank you for contacting Dr. Bronner's! We greatly appreciate you taking the time to share your concerns with us as we take the health and safety of our customers very seriously. While we do not make any products specifically for sensitive skin, many of our soaps work very well for those with skin sensitivities. Here is a list of our soaps from least to most moisturizing: Pure-Castile Liquid, Pure-Castile Bar, and Organic Sugar Soap. We have received very positive comments regarding our Baby Unscented and Tea Tree soaps from our customers with skin issues such as eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, acne, oily skin, or general skin sensitivities. However, we all have different skin, so we would advise first trying our product on a small area of your babies skin to be sure that it will work for them. Rest assured, our products have been tested and deemed safe in toxicological assessments, below the safety limits suggested by the governing authorities. However, please note that all fragrance oils are composed of constituents that may cause skin irritation for some, particularly in sensitive areas. With that in mind, rest assured that our Baby Unscented Pure-Castile Liquid Soap, or any of our milder scents such as Almond or Lavender, are great for young children and kids! When taking a bath, add a capful of soap into the bath water and let them soak. When bathing babies, we recommend using our Baby Unscented Pure-Castile Liquid Soap as it contains no essential oils and almost double the olive oil, making it perfect for washing your child's face, body, and hair. Just add a few drops (2 – 3) to a damp washcloth to easily maintain control of the soap as no true soap is tear-free, so it's important to keep soap out of the eyes. The “tear-free" characteristic can only be achieved with synthetic non-soap detergents and is not something we're able to do given the all-natural formulation of our soaps. To read more about bathing babies with our Pure-Castile Soap, head over to Lisa Bronner's blog post, Using Castile Baby Mild Soap on Babies (https://www.lisabronner.com/using-castile-baby-mild-soap-on-babies/). Should you have any further questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to us!

Q: What is the typical shelf life?

submitted by Hannah - 5 months ago
  • A: Hi, thank you for reaching out to Dr. Bronner's! In general, we recommend using Dr. Bronner’s body care products within three years of the manufacture date. Soaps are self-preserving, but because our products are readily biodegradable, it’s best to not leave them on the shelf for too long. Also, the soaps are good for 24 months after opening the product, within that 3-year window. To find out when our personal care products were manufactured, you can consult the “lot code,” a number that appears printed or etched on the packaging, typically just below the label. We do not use expiration dates, instead we use Julian dates. The first digits refer to the year (i.e., “17” is 2017, “20” is 2020, etc.), while the next three digits refer to the day of the year out of 365 total days. So, if the first five digits of a lot code are “17165,” the product was manufactured in 2017 on the 165th day of that year (June 14th). You can always search for a Julian date calendar for the specific year that your bottle was manufactured in online.

Q: Can I use this to clean VEGAN leather seats in my car? What would be the dilution?

submitted by Curious B - 6 months ago
  • A: Hi, thank you for your interest in Dr. Bronner's! While both our Pure-Castile Liquid Soap and Sal Suds Biodegradable Cleaner can work very well to clean leather car interiors, it is important to reach out to the manufacturer in the case that there is a special cleaner for this surface. Rest assured that if the finish manufacturer calls for a mild cleaner, both all-purpose sprays fit the bill. If you have a surface that is unusual, spot-testing is always a good idea. While Castile Soap is a great cleaner, Sal Suds is great for spot-treating carpets and for cleaning leather and microfiber furniture. It’s also great on cars and for degreasing engines. Depending on what you have on hand, either the Sal Suds All-Purpose Spray (1 Tbsp. in a quart of water) or the Castile All-Purpose Spray (¼ c. in a quart of water) will do a quick clean. If the leather needs to be nourished, you may want to consider a leather polish made from ⅓ c. vinegar with ⅔ c. olive oil and ½ tsp. pure essential lemon oil. Shake this up and rub it on with a soft rag. We do want to mention that if you are using our Pure-Castile Soap and have hard water, it is possible to encounter some mineral build-up. Rest assured that this is completely normal as the interaction of hard water, and even soft water, with any true soap (not synthetic detergent-based soaps), can leave behind a thin film of minerals that appears as residue or “soap scum. Please note that our products are not specifically formulated for interior car cleaning, and we have not tested them for all types of fabrics, including vegan leather. Our Organic Hand and Body Lotion, Organic Hair Crème, and Organic Hand Sanitizer are the only products we currently manufacture that contain alcohol as an ingredient. Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

Q: What is the Ph of this soap?

submitted by Vicki - 6 months ago
  • A: Thank you for your interest in our Baby Unscented Pure-Castile Soap! Dr. Bronner’s Pure-Castile Liquid soap falls within the pH range of 8.7 - 9.9. It is important to note that Dr. Bronner’s does not purposefully alternate or fluctuate the pH of our soap, and we do not add any synthetic preservatives. Instead, the highly concentrated nature of our soap keeps the product stable over time. Though this is not considered to be ‘pH balanced’, there is a bit of debate about if pH-balanced soap is necessary. We encourage you to read more about this topic in Lisa Bronner’s blog post Skin Health, pH, and Dr. Bronner’s Soap. https://www.lisabronner.com/skin-health-ph-and-dr-bronners-soap/ Lastly, should you have any health concerns when considering the pH of your soap, we always recommend that you consult with your dermatologist or physician just to be on the safe side.

Q: Is this safe to wash your private parts as well since it contains tea tree oil?

submitted by Jennyj135 - 8 months ago
  • A: Our Castile Soap works as a great body wash, and some also use this soap to wash around their feminine or masculine areas. Please keep in mind that this soap was not specifically made for these delicate areas, however we get positive feedback that it works just fine. As we are all different and some may be more sensitive down there than others, we recommend that you do a spot test first and using the Baby Unscented Castile Soap. For sensitive skin and sensitive areas of the body, we always suggest our Baby Unscented Castile Soap. The Peppermint soap for example, may be a bit strong for the area, as it will really tingle from the Peppermint Oil. If you are still unsure or have unique sensitivities, consult with your preferred medical professional to determine which product is right for you.

Q: What is the recommended soap-to-water dilution ratio for the best foaming action in my battery powered foaming soap dispenser?

submitted by John - 4 years ago
  • A: A good ratio to start with is 1 part soap to 3 parts water. You can then add more or less soap to your preference.

I’ve had some sensitive areas on my skin recently and this has worked wonders! It doesn’t cause any flare ups and I still feel/smell clean even though it’s unscented. I also love that it can be used a hundred different ways lol I was skeptical of the price at first, but a little seems to go a long way.

Great, gentle go-to soap for virtually anything! We bought a gallon of the unscented. We mix it with water to control white flies on our trees. It is good for showering, washing the dogs, you name it! No nasty or unpronounceable ingredients. Great great soap.

This is a warning to all mamas who have or wanted to try this product for their babies. I’m not typically a review person but. Recently. I discovered that my child randomly obtained a diaper rash. He’s 7 months old and has had a small rash only once in his life. In which we discovered it was the brand of diapers we were using at the time. Being so concerned I changed and tried everything. One day my husband was giving him a bath, he started washing his hair and some of the run off of soap and water trickled down his face. My child started screaming, his eyes became very red and irritated. Not knowing if this was the reason or if it was just water. I decided to test it while washing my face and oh my word it BURNED. I was completely heart broken. We decided to keep using and just avoid putting any soap on his hair, and started using just a wet rag. Shortly after I noticed his bottom had not gotten any better, I used the soap has a bubble bath sort of, and when I put my child into the water, he SCREAMED. It burned his skin just soaking in this stuff. I’m not saying this stuff is terrible for adults. But it should not be branded as baby wash. It is incredibly harmful to babies.

This castile soap is amazing. I use it for cleaning everything... I use it as a body wash, hand soap, produce wash, makeup brush cleanser, counter top cleaner... the list really does go on and on. I love that it is unscented and so effective at cleaning without leaving residue and also that it is all natural and safe for me, my family and the environment. This soap and all of Dr. Bronners products are amazing and I will be a customer for life.

Super effective soap! I use a mineral sunscreen everyday and I find gel soaps can’t wash it off my hands after applying. The sunscreen can turn white and sticky with inferior “soaps.” This unscented real Castile soap washes it away with only a couple drops. My hands are clean and my face is protected, ready for my day!

I use this soap now for my hand soap and my diy body wash and making my own soft scrub and face wash.

The bottle developed a crack at the base where the seam is. I stored the bottle under my kids’ bathroom sink and 3 days ago, my son found soap plastered all over the bathroom floor and inside the cabinet due to leaking from bottle. Good thing he didn’t slip and fall and able to inform me about the mess. Imagine having to mop up the concentrated soap on the entire bathroom floor and the cabinet. So much soap have been wasted

This cleaned my dog with ease! He had been pretty sick and ended up with a lot of cruddies around his tail. I worked this soap into a light lather, gently wiped the suds against his tail twice, and he was instantly cleaned! No soaking, scrubbing, or rinse-and-repeat necessary :) He was just left with clean, soothed skin.
