Learn to Change Now or Go Without Cheese and Die
I bought this book because the subject of the book “Factory Man”, John Bassett III, mentioned that he had read it and found it useful. I liked the man and his hard headed stubborn fight for domestic manufacturing, so I bought “Who Moved My Cheese” on that whim.As I read the book and the 4 cute characters Sniff and Scurry, the mice, and the little-mouse-sized-people, Hem and Haw, as they dealt with the trials and rewards of living in the maze; I found myself thinking that these life lessons should not have to be learned by smart business men as adults. I have sense learned that there is a wonderful children’s version of the book that is brilliantly illustrated.Upon consideration, I believe that adult little people do know these lessons already. The problem is that complex little adults can become bogged down in their own business dogma. In their arrogance they have come to believe that they are entitled to cheese; thus, the MY CHEESE part of the title. They get so into team playing, herd mindedness, and focused on the now of their lives, they fail to appreciate that the business maze is evolving / changing and if one fails to adapt they go extinct as a company. The mice on-the-other-hand represents the less complex more childlike creatures keenly attuned to supple changes in the maze and adapt quickly to change, using their primary survival senses.Anecdotal story is the best way of overcoming the group think, herd mentality, obstinate patterns of an ossified business thinking model. One must persuade the other individual to remove their blinders and see differently otherwise they remain convinced that (A) nothing is wrong or (B) nothing needs change. The beauty of this reminder is in its childlike simplicity. These lessons are best learned in childhood. But if they are not learned; this book is not a bad way to learn or relearn them. So business man, I recommend you get a copy for yourself and buy the illustrated children’s version for your progeny.

Book Review: Who Moved My Cheese?

"Who Moved My Cheese?" by Spencer Johnson is a thought-provoking book that invites readers to reflect deeply on their approach to change and personal growth. For me, it provided a fresh lens to examine my mindset, my reactions to life's circumstances, and the reasons behind those reactions.

The story uses four characters—Sniff, Scurry (mice), and Hem, Haw (little people)—to represent different attitudes toward change. This clever characterization drew me in and made the lessons relatable. I resonated most with Sniff, as I see myself as someone who looks ahead and is always searching for new opportunities. However, I also see myself evolving into Scurry, focusing on action and implementation—a shift I find empowering.

There wasn’t anything I disliked about the book; its simplicity and relatability were its greatest strengths. It's a short, impactful read that captures attention and encourages self-reflection and implementation. The storytelling is so compelling that it blurs the line between a quick read and a lifelong lesson.

I recommend this book wholeheartedly to my team, organization, family, and anyone eager for self-improvement. Whether you're navigating personal challenges or professional hurdles, this book offers timeless insights.

    Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The storytelling, actionable insights, and brevity make it a standout. While it’s a quick read, its true value lies in applying its lessons to real-life situations.

This washed my brain inside out. I only wish I had read this piece of Gold earlier in life . I bought the kindle version for less than $2. Its surprising how people have not paid much attention to this topic and there are only few books out there that explain how to deal with change. I loved this book and would have my family and friends read this too. The parable is so much intriguing yet simple. It made me think where I stand and represent whom (among the 4 characters) in the story. Yes it is only a parable with a couple pages of discussion on the parable. I do not understand the negative criticism here on the reviews. I think their dissatisfaction is valid if they expected this book to come at a lower price( paper copy) or if they expected long pages of discussion. In my opinion, the number of pages do not really matter that much. It is more about how the book hits you just right so that you are able to assimilate and see changes happening fast and easy. Most of the tough questions in life have real simple answers. Thank you for this amazing book.

Edit: After reading some of the negative responses from the readers I now understand why this book failed to impress everyone equally . I would like to share my way of looking at it.Sometimes people cannot adjust well to changes in life. For instance, moving from school to high school to college and so on. In all these cases you know you want to move ahead but have to prepare yourself and grow to become a more capable person. Not that you are inadequate but because different situations demand different responsibilities and skills. It is always best to be proactive in life and seize control rather than barely manage stuff thrown at you. But most importantly these new situations must be desired by you . Its a totally different story when you want to impress your own self . Many people wish to challenge themselves and grow. But if you look at it from a different perspective, you are sure to hate this book. If you think that the book orders you to change according to somebody else's ( boss , your company etc) wish and that this is the only way to "survive" then you might want to step back and get a new perspective that serves you. No, it does want to train you to happily and maturely succumb to changes imposed on you. Do not chase after the cheese that someone else is moving away for their benefit. This chase must be your own life story. For eg - when I moved out of my city to pursue college, I did not know what to do! I could not let go of my best friends back home and I felt challenged with the new curriculum . I figured everything was very different from school. Now I strove hard to get into this college ( "my" desire- meaning I moved my cheese) and did not know how to deal with it. This book is helpful for such situations . I had new friendships waiting for me and a different skill set to develop. I had to be okay with the new situation and evaluate how I could grow and become the person that I wanted to be. All this was not to fit in( having to chase the cheese moved by someone else) but because I wanted to learn it . There you go. I hope this helps!

Pertinent for today’s day in age. Fun, easy read

I picked up a used copy this week when my Kindle ran out of gas on the road. I thought Cheese might be a lively read on my flight home from the Bay Area. Interestingly, Oakland just endured several days of Mayday rioting; someone is really excited about the change they are experiencing. Not sure this would make a good hand-out/give-away.

My introduction to this book was more than a decade ago during my fourth layoff cycle. Everyone received a copy and was encouraged to attend a half-day discussion afterwards. I remember liking the book, though I was still unsure about my fate as an employee. I remember not knowing if I was Hem or Haw in the story; likely more Hem at that point. It was the conversation with trained facilitators that made the book really sink in for many of us. Everyone had a chance to ask questions and vent their frustration. True to the book, many of us were stuck at Cheese Station C and unwilling to move. Staff reductions came and went. We got on with business and things got better over time. I stayed in touch with many of my cohorts, thanks to Linkedin. Most found new jobs - many that were more rewarding. They found new cheese and it was good.

Change happens - there's just no getting around that. We each have to learn to adapt to it in our own way, and in our own time. If you feel insulted by this book, put it down and read a different one. Be thankful it was only one hour out of your life. If Cheese was too short with not enough details or instruction, Amazon has many great books on the subject. Pick out one that appeals to you and dive in. If you feel the problem is all management's fault, then you are probably at the wrong company, anyway. Start your own business and show them how it should be done!

If you are in a leadership position and you intend to hand out copies with little to no communication about WHY change is necessary, read the nearly five hundred one-star reviews before acting. Leaving employees in the dark will take you deep into the employee morale pit. Right to the bottom.

Not to leave you in the lurch, the story continues. I survived that layoff but not the next one. Re-reading my copy, I soon realized I had grown complacent; I had become like "the littlepeople", oblivious to what was happening around me. The writing was on the wall for quite some time and I chose to ignore it. The cheese was old and I should have been out searching for newer, fresh opportunities. Tough lesson to learn, but this time it was different. No complaining, no anger. The cheese has moved - go look for it!
