Becca : WOW! I mean just WOW! What took us so long to read this Lisa?! I have no idea why I waited so long!! Throne of Glass is absolutely everything it is hyped to be! Action packed, with a hint of romance and fierce characters that are totally bad a$$! I loved everything about this book from the first page to the last!
Caelena Sardothien is an assassin, or at least she was until she was captured and forced into captivity and slavery. When the Crown Prince finds her and offers her one shot a freedom, she has no choice but to accept his offer. She is to be placed into a competition (with all men) as Prince Dorian's champion and fight to become a royal assassin. will live in the castle and be trained by the Captain of the Guard Chaol Westfall. When one of the other competitors turns up dead, Caelena discovers there is a lot more going on in the castle than she expected.
Throne of Glass isn't just about the competition that Cealena is in, there is so much going on throughout the entire novel! It is so full of action and from one second to the next I never knew what was going to happen! I absolutely loved it!
Lisa : Right?! I really don't know why we waited so long. Well, in all honestly, I did attempt to read this last year... but I wasn't in the mood for it, and felt that I wasn't giving it my full attention. I have that issue a lot with fantasy reads. So I ended up putting it down. Picking it back up AND buddy reading it with Becca was the perfect solution, and I loved it this time around! Some books are just even more fun with friends!
THE CHARACTERS:
Lisa : Celaena Sardothien was some kickass heroine! I loved her spunky and unwillingness to turn the other cheek. She was a toughy, and the fact that she was going up against all men never seemed to phase her. She was determined to do her best and never give up. She gave these guys a run for their money, and never batted an eyelash in the process. Definitely my kind of girl!
"Here's a lesson for you, Weapons Master," she said, stalking past him. "Give me real men to fight. Then maybe I'll bother trying."
I also completely adored Nehemia and her strength and smarts. This girl had willpower only comparable to Calaena's. That's right, you read it correctly... TWO amazingly strong heroines to take part in this story!
With all the guy "team" talk I've seen, I had no idea which way I would go with this one... but I'm totally Team Choal. There's just something about him I really enjoyed. Maybe his total unwillingness to accept his feelings for Calaena, or maybe how protective and strong her came off. Either way, he was totally *SWOON* in my opinion!
Becca : Caelena was so totally bad a$$ and awesome! I have definitely read some fierce and heroic heroines Katniss, Tris, Penryn and Caelena definitely tops that list of amazing and unforgettable heroines! I was so captivated by her from the very beginning with her slavery in the mines and then with the competition when all of her competitors were men and she fought so hard and was full of confidence and ability!
I agree completely with Lisa that Nehemia was just as amazing! Nehemia provided Caelena with a friend and confidant and I loved their friendship. Once they learned to trust each other, they were unstoppable!
“You could rattle the stars," she whispered. "You could do anything, if only you dared. And deep down, you know it, too. That’s what scares you most.”
I have seen all the team talk as well regarding this series and I did my best to ignore it so that I could form my own opinion without preconceived notions. Although, from what I've seen there seems to be an even divide between Chaol and Dorian. After reading Throne of Glass I understand why, they are both pretty amazing! Without spoiling this for others... I am ALL team Chaol over here! I loved the friendship and trust that he and Caelena formed.
Even the villains were perfect! Kane, Princess Kaltain and The King were so unlikable and despicable and I loved to hate them!
“Sometimes, the wicked will tell us things just to confuse us–to haunt our thoughts long after we've faced them.”
This cast of characters was amazing and Maas completely blew me away with how well she developed each one of them! She built a lovable (and sometimes not so lovable) and unforgettable cast of characters!
OVERALL:
Becca : Sarah J Maas built such an amazing Fantasy world and I was quickly swept into it! The characters, the world building and the story line were all addicting and I cannot wait to continue with this series! This was my first book by Maas and I am excited and eager to read more!
“I like music," she said slowly, "because when I hear it, I . . . I lose myself within myself, if that makes any sense. I become empty and full all at once, and I can feel the whole earth roiling around me. When I play. I'm not . . . for once, I'm not destroying, I'm creating.”
Lisa : I first fell in love with SJM when I read A Court of Thorns and Roses earlier this year. The way she forms her words into such perfection, taking us to another world completely is astounding. Since I don't read a lot of books in the fantasy genre, it's tough for me to find go-to authors that I'm confident I will enjoy. Sarah J. Maas is now my number one fantasy author! I will definitely be continuing on with this series. If only I could get my hands on Crown of Midnight , like, today!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2020‘Throne Of Glass’ is the first installment in the ‘Throne of Glass’ book series. After reading the synopsis of this book I wasn’t 100% sure if I wanted to read it, because it didn’t really intrigue me to want to dive into the book. However after reading Maas’ other book series ‘A Court of Thorns And Red Roses’, which I absolutely loved, and the amazing book reviews of ‘Throne of Glass’ I decided to give this book a shot and I’m very happy that I did. Lately it has been very difficult for me to find a book that draws me in, so I’m very happy to have found my fix and sweet escape again in this book.
‘Throne of Glass’ is a book about gaining freedom and making new friends in places that you least expect it. In this book we mainly follow the life of Celaena Sardothien who has been sentenced to a life of slavery, until she got a proposition from the Crown Prince, Dorian Havilliard, to act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin in exchange for her freedom.
Celaena is Adarlan’s most notorious assassin and her reputation has caused her to become quite vain and arrogant. However she’s a very likable character; she’s very kind, clever and witty. I also loved that she’s such a badass heroine and that she can hold her own.
Then there’s Chaol Westfall, Celaena’s overseer and the Captain of the Royal Guard, who’s ruggedly handsome, stoic and patriotic. Chaol is usually very stern, but in this first installment we get to see glimpses of his tenderness. In this book we also saw his inner struggle when it comes to him following the King’s orders and doing what’s morally right. There’s also Dorian who’s tall, toned, elegant and an absolute flirt. We also saw Dorian’s strained relationship with his father the King and his struggles to stay in his father’s good graces. Both guys are very interesting and likable, but I can’t seem to choose between the two. Maybe after diving more into the series I’ll be able to do so :P
Just like in ‘A Court of Thorns and Roses’, I was really captured by the secondary characters in this book. Especially the Princess of Eyllwe, who’s also very witty and a badass in her own right. The secondary characters - from Celaena’s personal servant Philippa right down to the antagonists - are multidimensional characters, who you can’t help but to like or to dislike.
I really enjoyed the manner in which the book was written. The storytelling is very descriptive in a way that it draws you into this complex world that Maas has created. The map also adds to the book’s allure, which helps to draw its readers into this bewitching world.
I also thought that it was very interesting that the story was told from the third-person narrative, which allowed the readers to see the inner workings of the minds of the different characters to give us a glimpse of what moves them and to understand why they do the things they do.
I really enjoyed this first installment in the book series and I’m very curious to see how this story will unfold. This book also kept me at the edge of my seat. There was so much going on, from solving the mystery of the killer to Celaena’s blossoming romance. Speaking of which, I’m still mind boggled by this new romance because of Celaena and her love interest’s backgrounds. It didn’t make much sense when you thought it through.
Overall, this was a very promising start to this series and I’m looking forward to diving more into this captivating and enthralling world. If you’re in the mood for an action-packed read with multidimensional characters and a badass heroine, then you should definitely give this book a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A joy to read, a story to captivate, characters to fascinate and set in a magical world
5 glistening stars for the ‘Throne of Glass’ by Sarah J Maas who in my opinion reigns supreme as the Queen of Fantasy.
From the opening chapters we are treated with excellent world building, fascinating characters, and vivid descriptive prose that transports the reader into the world of dark fairy tales. A place I can quite easily stay when the story delivers this much.
This is total escapism at its best. Easy to read, captivating, adventurous, and with the requisite adrenaline rush you come to expect with these Fantasy stories but with some humour and a bit of romance thrown in to add more appeal.
The Storyline
Notorious assassin, eighteen-year-old Celaena Sardothien, has been locked up in Endovia’s death camp for the last year. A salt mine where few get out alive. So, when Dorian the Prince of Adarlan nominates Celaena as his champion, Celaena seizes the opportunity to win her freedom. Her challenge to become the Kings Champion is to beat the other 24 competitors in a series of trials, not all of them in physical battle, but survival of the fittest in mind, body, and spirit. If she wins, she only has to remain with the king for 4 years and then her freedom is guaranteed.
One by one the bodies of contestants are discovered brutally murdered which creates suspicion, blame and mistrust among the group. However, with one eye on each other they should not lose sight of the mystery that lies within the castle and a king who is every bit as corrupt as he is dangerous. For he seems to have a game plan of his own.
“Sometimes, the wicked will tell us things just to confuse us–to haunt our thoughts long after we've faced them.”
Review and Comments
Mama Mai this was good -
'Gimme gimme gimme a Chaol after midnight and a Prince like Dorian to take my troubles away' - and music please !!!!
The characterisation is excellent particularly that of Celaean, a strong female fantasy character I actually like. Intelligent, brave, determined, and street wise – well most of the time until someone pushes her buttons. However, behind the battle-hardened façade is a beautiful woman, who is caring, passionate and witty and because of this draws the attention of two suitors. Chaol and the Prince himself, Dorian, who both have some redeeming qualities but great characters. We had an intriguing cast of characters that brought so much drama to the story. Some had more prominent roles - for now!! but we will see again in the series. The seeds have been sown.
The Plot was clever and well thought out not just in this book, but you can see all the subplots opening up to be continued through the series. The plot felt stripped back from other SJM books which was a welcome change, because sometimes it can feel there was too much going on, and not all of it relevant. Whereas this was.
Another explosion of imagination and another story that gripped me from the start. I loved that the trials were not designed for some backass bitch or bloke to triumph in where physical prowess was the only skill worth measuring. The contestants were tested for their observational and mental skills too, which was well done and another welcome change.
Things to be aware of
There is a trend being created by SJM in that she uses the first book in each series to introduce the characters and creates the various realms and kingdoms for the story to unfold through the series. The reason for mentioning is because some reviews have criticised the loose ends, plot holes, and needing to read the series to fully understand the story. So be warned this is a series, so you will not get closure on the full story in book 1.
Whilst it might feel some questions are left unanswered, you know the seeds have been sown for these threads to be picked up again and woven into later books. That said there is no shortage of action, suspense, intrigue and scheming in this novel and it ends at the right time.
If like me you have read the later series first, like A Court of Thorns and Roses, then you can tell how SJM herself has developed as an author. This does not change my scoring because I would have given ACOTR a six if I could. The first 3 books were outstanding, a little more complex and multi-layered.
A joy to read, a story to captivate, characters to fascinate and set in a world that is magical, enchanting, but dangerously exciting. And am I looking forward to this series. Too darn right I am.
