- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2021There are some great bits of advice in here that shed a better light on a wide variety of life's struggles. Sometimes all we need is a little perspective.
I only wish a little more time could have been spent on some of the more sensitive topics. But there is a great list of additional resources to explore at the end of the book if you'd like to go into any topic in greater depth.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2020Amazing! I enjoyed reading the book. It's helped me a lot to have a different point of view about relationships and work decisions too. Easily you can have a guide of how deals with situations—highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2020Simple, yet brilliant insights for navigating common points of conduct we all experience as we move through life.
Taking that extra second to consider your own response to external factors makes all the difference!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2021This is not what I expected but I found myself appreciating the relative simplicity of it. I would not call the solutions offered in depth but good reminders that we can't always influence others and that trying often results in a lot of frustration on our part. It took me a little time to get used to the way the issues (family and romance to name a couple) are handled. Each specific problem is presented with a short, concise suggestion as to how to look at it and deal with it. At first it seemed too simple but as I read on I realized that there is an overarching theme, that we cannot control others. We can only control ourselves. I don't know if it is intended but somehow through the repetition of this theme over and over in multiple situations, the message starts to sink in and that, for me, is the value of this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2020A lot of the advice in this book is very surface level ‘take it or leave it’. Like, ok, in the section about troubles at home, there is a scenario presented where your landlord is “not helpful and rude”. (All the advice scenarios are presented as: here’s a problem, consider these two ideas about it, and then a paragraph breaking that down.) The book tries to be reasonable in most of the scenarios, taking the middle ground I’d say, but in this landlord scenario, the ‘consider this’ options are take them to court or move out….life is not that black/white/simple. If you’ve ever faced hardship of the mildest sort as a renter, you would know hiring a lawyer and navigating housing court, or, breaking your lease to enter the market and then have to convince prospective new landlords why you’re a great tenant and it really was the other landlord who was the bad guy and you won’t break a lease again…yea that is just not how life works. Maybe this book should be labeled as more of a talking points book, to start some healthy debates or discussions among friends, but I wouldn’t look to it for wisdom or life advice. It’s not a bad read if you look at it as a conversation starter guide, it actually is great at that, but you’re not going to find any magic solutions to life problems here.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2018This is a practical, useful, easy-to-read book that provides wonderful, succinct advice on how to get through the challenges of life, whether it's dealing with a landlord or a partner. I loved the book, and have already taken the author's advice in my relationship.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2018Great book, helped me a lot at work.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2022Right away, I loved the subtopics (problem areas needing resolution) that Parekh presented. They were extremely relatable: A family member deceived you; You feel like your boss is making your life difficult; Your child is dating or marrying a person you do not approve of: A loved one died unexpectedly, etc.
It appears one of the main goals of this book is to help people keep from making a bad situation worse. Parekh has a warm writing style which allows you to read the book easily and process the information to see if the suggestions are a fit for you. I found the system for problem-solving an excellent way to maintain a positive outlook and help emotions stay under control. Clearly, some of the situations presented can become quite complicated, but having a reference book that encourages levelheaded decision-making while working through the depth of a challenge is a great idea!
