Arty Parties: An Entertaining Cookbook from the Creator of Salad for President Hardcover – October 26, 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
Artists throw superior parties, and we can learn from their willingness to draw outside the lines, choose character over perfection, and find boundless joy in feeding family and friends. Cook, live, and host like an artist with inspired, easy recipes and playful hands-on experiments in the kitchen.
Sherman shows you how to be the architect of your own uniquely memorable bash, whether that means a special breakfast for two, or a “choose your own adventure” meal that’s flexible enough to feed a crowd. Forget the codified markers of good taste—Arty Parties instead reveals that modern gatherings are less about “getting it right” and more about getting your hands dirty, building community, and taking risks in the kitchen and beyond. Featuring colorful food that is confident in its simplicity, Sherman shares easy-to-follow, healthy recipes that value imaginative flavor combinations over complexity: dishes like an avocado-lemongrass panna cotta, saffron tomato soup, coconut rice cakes with smashed avocado and soy-marinated eggs, and roasted broccolini and blood oranges with a creamy pepita sauce.
This book also invites readers into the idiosyncratic gatherings of internationally acclaimed artists, from a chic office party in a Parisian art book publisher's atelier to an underground earth oven pizza party on a secluded hillside in Los Angeles. Woven throughout are Sherman’s own homegrown events that are relatable yet wonderfully experimental in tone.
Utterly unique and beautifully designed, Arty Parties is a guide to creating meaningful experiences that nourish both the host and their guests in body, mind, and soul.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“Julia Sherman is a grand champion of creative get-togethers. She wants you to be one too and this gem of a book is the spark you need if you tend to talk yourself out of entertaining (we’ve all been there). Arty Parties gets under the hood and shows you how to make the world your dining room, rethink what it means to host, cook great food, and have fun in the process.”―Heidi Swanson, author of Super Natural Simple
“Arty Parties is so utterly original, playful, and practical that if it doesn’t inspire you to throw a party, I don’t know what will. Amid thoughtful recipes highlighting exquisitely sourced ingredients, Julia Sherman profiles a mix of artists’ parties that run the gamut from a chic Parisian office party to a queer performance night in Upstate New York. Everything in the book has the same message: Food is visual art, a performance, and sustenance. The next time you entertain, think outside the box.”―Stephanie Danler, author of Sweetbitter and Stray
“Julia Sherman is bursting with delicious ideas: eat a halved furikake-sprinkled avocado, perhaps on the go or over the sink! Soak some sour cherries in vodka for a memorable hostess gift! Toss a head of romaine on the grill and mix it with celery-kumquat salsa to make a mouth-watering salad! Sherman takes us in hand and teaches us not to be too precious in the kitchen: to experiment, make a mess, try something new. This book is a reminder that food is a party, and a really good one at that.”―Naomi Fry, staff writer, The New Yorker

- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2022Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseSeriously, how did I not know about this amazing cook? Or is she a professionally trained chef? I literally had no idea who Julia Sherman was, but she showed up in an advertisement from a place I have bought furniture!!! So I checked out Salad for President and bought her most recent book. It's like she's my home- cook soulmate, but way, way more talented and creative. I've only made two recipes from her so far, one from her gorgeous blog and one from her new book. Both were excellent.. I don't know if it's intentional but many of her recipes are low-carb, which is helpful for someone in my family. From her blog I made the most amazing egg salad and cucumber salad to complement it--the egg salad creaminess comes not from mayo but from caramelized onions. It was brilliant and surprisingly amazing. From the cookbook I made the salmon lettuce wraps with raita and fried lentils. I can't say we could eat these as wraps as we greedily piled the toppings on our overwhelmed lettuce leaves. But the flavors came together so incredibly well and I can't stop thinking about the fried lentils. I want those with everything. Can't wait to dive in to more of her recipes! Sherman is brilliant; I haven't been this excited about a cookbook author maybe ever.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2022Format: HardcoverI love that, on top of having a collection of amazing + accessible recipes, this book gives you tips and tricks for being an adaptable cook AND guest. It is about being casual, inclusive, and having a good time over being precious or perfect. It is written like advice from a good friend and has a cool clear key on each recipe that lets you know what season it is for, aspects to make ahead (or not), and whether it makes good leftovers. Also takes into account budget without being fringe, cheap, or boring. Knowing how to feed a crowd something delicious without spending all your coin is a huge plus. HIGHLY RECOMMEND adding this (and Julia's first book, Salad For President) to your kitchen tools!!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2021Format: HardcoverCreating potatoes that are crispy and golden on the outside but creamy and soft within can be a challenge. However, once you know the secret of boiling them first before finishing them under your broiler, you can achieve perfect results consistently.
These lemon smashed potatoes with a pile of herbs arejust one of the many recipes featured in ‘Arty Parties: An Entertaining Cookbook’ from Julia Sherman.
The book is packed full of useful ideas for elevating your hosting game. We found so much inspiration throughout and really appreciated the playful vibe of the book. We can’t wait to apply some of the techniques to our next party.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exciting recipes... irritating typesetting
Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThere are some really exciting recipes in this book, with some fresh takes on conventional ingredients (e.g. cabbage: crispy napa cabbage with cilantro-yogurt sauce, cabbage tinga and other recipes are great ways to make a rather boring veggie really appealing). But for a book with "Arty" in the title, I find the typesetting and formatting choices in some places annoying to the extent that it detracts from the book. The text in some of the recipes makes them hard to follow. So for that I'm taking off a star.
