#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In her long-awaited memoir, Ina Garten—aka the Barefoot Contessa, author of thirteen bestselling cookbooks, beloved Food Network personality, Instagram sensation, and cultural icon—shares her personal story with readers hungry for a seat at her table.

A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR:
The New York Times Book Review, Time, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Town & Country

Here, for the first time, Ina Garten presents an intimate, entertaining, and inspiring account of her remarkable journey. Ina’s gift is to make everything look easy, yet all her accomplishments have been the result of hard work, audacious choices, and exquisite attention to detail. In her unmistakable voice (no one tells a story like Ina), she brings her past and her process to life in a high-spirited and no-holds-barred memoir that chronicles decades of personal challenges, adventures (and misadventures) and unexpected career twists, all delivered with her signature combination of playfulness and purpose.

From a difficult childhood to meeting the love of her life, Jeffrey, and marrying him while still in college, from a boring bureaucratic job in Washington, D.C., to answering an ad for a specialty food store in the Hamptons, from the owner of one Barefoot Contessa shop to author of bestselling cookbooks and celebrated television host, Ina has blazed her own trail and, in the meantime, taught millions of people how to cook and entertain. Now, she invites them to come closer to experience her story in vivid detail and to share the important life lessons she learned along the way: do what you love because if you love it you’ll be really good at it, swing for the fences, and always

Be Ready When the Luck Happens is a wildly entertaining and compulsively readable story about curiosity and courage, challenges and coconut cupcakes. It’s also a love story for the ages. Smart and funny, warm and engaging, Ina Garten proves just how lucky a person can be if she’s willing to work hard, get over her past, and be fully and fearlessly engaged with life.”—Ann Patchett, author of Tom Lake

5 out of 5 stars
Book Review: Be Ready When the Luck Happens by Ina Garten
Ina Garten’s memoir, Be Ready When the Luck Happens, is a delightful and candid exploration of her personal and professional journey. Known as the Barefoot Contessa, Garten opens up about her life with a mix of humor, wit, and vulnerability that fans will appreciate. The book chronicles her evolution from a nuclear energy analyst in Washington, D.C., to an iconic culinary figure, detailing the pivotal moments that shaped her career and personal life. One of the memoir’s strengths is Garten’s ability to balance self-reflection with storytelling. She shares intimate details about her childhood, which was marked by strict expectations and emotional challenges and fueled by her desire for independence and creativity. Her bold decision to leave a stable government job and venture into a completely new field, buying a specialty food store in the Hamptons, despite having no culinary experience, is a testament to her audacious spirit and willingness to embrace change. Through anecdotes about her marriage to Jeffrey, their brief separation in the 1970s, and their enduring partnership, Garten paints a picture of mutual support and growth that adds depth to her narrative. The memoir also portrays Garten’s passion for food as an expression of love and connection. Her philosophy of simplicity and quality in cooking resonates throughout the book, emphasizing how food can bring people together. Fans will enjoy her behind-the-scenes insights into creating cookbooks, hosting television shows, and even decorating her Paris apartment—a testament to her meticulous attention to detail. However, the memoir does leave some gaps. While Garten touches on personal challenges such as her childhood struggles and marital dynamics, she does not delve deeply into topics like hormonal changes or how they may have impacted her quality of life. This omission feels like a missed opportunity to address an issue many professional women face but rarely discuss openly. Exploring how such personal factors influenced her career could have added another layer of relatability and depth to her story. Overall, Be Ready When the Luck Happens is an engaging and inspiring read that captivates the reader with Ina Garten’s charm, resilience, and ability to turn challenges into opportunities. While it may leave readers wanting more on specific topics, it remains a testament to Garten’s mantra: “Do what you love because if you love it, you’ll be really good at it.”

Reading Ina Garten, felt like watching her shows which I enjoy. It had warmth, wit, charm, and an insight into how Ina became the Barefoot Contessa.

Be Ready When the Luck Happens is a page turner! It flows so easily that you want to know what will happen next, a few pictures and recipes included. We learn about Ina's early childhood, the love between her and Jeffrey, her real estate and cooking business ventures.

While Ina thinks luck is it, we see that Ina works very hard to get the things she wants. Whether it is in testing recipes and adding her spin or in the way she went around getting the buildings ready for either her home or business. This is a memoir to read, start it now if you have not!

I enjoyed learning more details about Ina’s life and businesses although she’s kind of an open book and most of it was out there already. Nonetheless,She’s is truly remarkable and has achieved stunning success across so many platforms due to her creativity, hard work and immense luck. She has a lot of heart! The actual writing was not my favorite . It was true to her voice, but a little thin and trite. How many times can you say “ swing for the fences”? Still , Bravo to Ina.

I like Ina Garten. Her recipes are a joy to follow and her style of cooking is one that is easy to emulate: she seems to do it with such ease. I knew the moment that I began reading her autobiography that I would enjoy it. She did not disappoint. She shares various phases of her life with an open and seemingly honest approach. Her style of writing is such that one is allowed into her story in the same was as one is allowed into her kitchen.
Being of similar ages and backgrounds, I appreciated so much of what she was willing to share.
I hope that she continues to take us along with her journeys. There is still so much to learn.

I am not a nonfiction or autobiography reader as a rule, however this book was recommended to me so highly that I was curious. It got my attention immediately and never let go. I feel like I know Ina after reading this book. I looked up old Barefoot Contessa shows on YouTube because I had never seen any. Now I want to buy her cookbooks! And that’s really crazy because I don’t like to cook! I loved this book and the voice of Ina.

I thought I was about to read lots of recipes but the authors ,s decision to follow her heart ,facing multi challenges along the way, opting out when her head told her it was time for new adventures, was a most captivating story. There is something in Ina,s scenarios for everyone to relate to in their own personal life stories …in 1960,early married years ,I had never cooked , so decided if I could read ,I could cook so started with dinner party recipes ie scallops, weiner snitzel,Baked Alaska!!? Later I found that I actually liked creating dishes for guests .."..starting with Gourmet magazine ,moving on to Julia child and Lucy Waverman …..I’m late arriving at The Barefoot Contessa but look forward to purchasing those editions too,, my advice ,,,buy this memoir for inspiration ,,you’ll be so glad you did …I give it 10stars for humour !,and the guts to follow her dreams !!bev macdougall

I loved that Ina sprinkled in her gorgeous recipes throughout the book, but most importantly shed light on the lessons she’d learnt in the business, as well as things she learnt about herself.

A very candid sharing about her family upbringings made the book content very relatable and real. Her pursuit to find beauty in food, hosting, fashion, and authenticity in the way she comes across to people is inspiring and this book is an awesome read.

Thank you Ina - I’m learning to find beauty and elegance in this too.
